Safety and Consent Agreement

Contra Dance – Safety and Consent Agreement

I will respect my fellow dancers regardless of dance skill and background, gender identity, gender expression, age, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, etc.

I will respect the physical and personal boundaries of my fellow dancers both on and off the dance floor.

I am empowered to inform a fellow dancer if something they do makes me uncomfortable or physically hurts me. If possible, I will show them how to interact more comfortably.

I will respect fellow dancers’ requests to stop doing something that makes them uncomfortable or physically hurts them, and will try to improve my interactions.

I am free to decline an invitation to dance for any reason, without excuses. I am free to then accept an invitation from another dancer.

I will respect the wishes of someone who declines my request. If my invitations are frequently declined, I will respectfully ask why, pay attention to the responses, and amend my behavior to become a more acceptable partner.

I will do my best not to step on, bump into, or trip other dancers. I will not attempt dance moves (such as aerials, lifts, or large movements) if they are potentially dangerous to my partner, the dancers around me, or myself.

I am empowered to bring inappropriate actions that I personally experience or observe to the attention of the organizers.

Actions that compromise the safe and respectful environment of this event are not acceptable. Anyone who repeatedly refuses to comply will be told to leave.
